What do you get when you combine the classic style of the Puma Swing GTX and the athletic look and feel of the Swing Crown GTX golf shoe? You end up with Puma Tipper golf shoe, the latest neo-classic addition to the Smart Quill family of golf shoes.
Style
The white genuine leather upper features the classic look of the Swing GTX with its wing tip dot pattern on the toe and narrow profile. The carbon fiber print of the Puma band the runs along the side of the Tipper give the shoe an athletic look and feel. The resemblance to the Swing Crown GTX can be seen in the Tipper’s black reinforcement cage at the upper portion of the shoe to provide support.
Just like its siblings the Tipper sits on a full foot TPU Smart Quill outsole, different for left and right feet, giving a game-changing edge to a classic looking golf shoe.
Smart Quills
The Puma Tipper golf shoe as mentioned earlier features the same Smart Quill technology found in the Swing GTX and Swing Crown GTX.
Smart Quill spikes are made out of TPU plastic (which will last about two-years according to Puma), and each one is positioned at a specific angle to customize traction for your backswing, downswing, and follow-through.
And don’t be alarmed that the left foot and right foot have different quill patterns and appear in contrasting colors; they are designed that way. Puma created them differently because each plays its own role during your swing.
The Smart Quills are not only “green friendly”, they also provide great traction and feel in all types of conditions: firm fairways, fluffy bunkers, hardpan, deep rough, and on the green. One of the hidden benefits of the smart quills are that they prevent the clumping of dirt and debris, thereby eliminating the need to clean the quills after each round, as you would with regular soft spikes.
Performance
The Tipper Golf shoe are extremley lightweigh weighing only 14 oz, thanks to its glass fiber sole plate. Even on hot days the Tipper does a great job at keeping your feet very cool with its breathable textile lining.
On the course the Tipper did a great job of supporting my feet and providing the right amount of traction when walking in all types of conditions. The Tipper’s Smart Quills also did a great job of never digging into the ground when walking in wet conditions or immobilizing my foot work during my swing.
The one area that the Tipper golf shoe really excelled in to my surprise, was how quickly the shoe drained water after I accidentally stepped into ankle deep water to retrieve my golf ball. The Tipper drained any water that go into my shoe very quickly and the shoe didn’t feel any heavier afterwards or make that horrible squishy water logged sound. The leather upper has a two-year waterproof guarantee, so you don’t have to worry about soggy golf shoes!
I’ve heard some people mention that Puma golf shoes are too narrow in the toe or uncomfortable to wear. I didn’t experience any discomfort wearing the Tipper when walking on the golf course or have any problems getting my feet to fit in the toe box of the Tipper (I think I have wide feet, but don’t wear a wide).
Overall the Puma Tipper golf shoe are the perfect blend of style, comfort, and technology in a very affordable pair of golf shoes.

can the quils be replaced after they have worn down?or do you need to replace the shoes?
Matthew,
the quills cannot be replaced on the Tipper golf shoe, so you’ll need to replace the shoes. The quill will last about 2 years. Also, Puma is releasing in Spring 2010 the Cell Fusion golf shoe that features Smart Quills that can be replaced. These are the shoes that Rickie Fowler has been wearing.
Thanks
