Golf is a sport where muscle memory is an important part of the learning process and improving your game. One area where muscle memory is very important is the putting stroke. How would you know what the perfect putting stroke feels like and consistently repeat it?

You could buy countless putting training aids or take lessons with a PGA Professional. But what if you could just go to your local driving range and take putting lessons from a robot? You’re in luck! A new vending machine for putting lessons called RoboPutt was just introduced at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show to do just that.

Watch this video of Joe Sery, CEO/President of RoboPutt talk about the features of RoboPutt and give a demonstration on how it works.

How RoboPutt Works
Using your own putter, you can buy a 5-minute lesson for less than the cost of a sleeve of good golf balls. During your lesson, RoboPutt will move your own putter, perfectly repeating it time after time. Simply hold your putter and feel how it moves you. Like the saying goes, practice makes perfect!

Watch this video of Chad Johansen, PGA Professional and Inventor of The Perfect Putting Aid demonstrate the many uses of this simple and effective putting training aid.

About The Perfect Putting Aid
The Perfect Putting Aid was developed by PGA Professional Chad Johansen, who was constantly using the putting gate drill and chalk line to help his students learn about path and starting the ball online.

The Perfect Putting Aid consists of several pieces, a tower, a putting line, and mirror. All three items can be used together or separately depending on what you’re trying to work on. For example, if you want to work on making a proper putting stroke you can use the Putting Line to practice putting the ball down the length of the line without it going off line. Or you can use the mirror to look at your shoulder and head position at address.

What I liked about The Perfect Putting Aid, is how simple and easy it is to use. You can use it indoors or outdoors and work on so many different aspects of your putting. And the immediate feedback it provides is amazing. Don’t just take my word for it, 2010 PGA Tour Puerto Rico Open winner Derek Lamely uses the Perfect Putting Aid daily, and so do many other PGA Tour players.

Best of all, The Perfect Putting Aid is Made in the USA. How many golf training aids do you know of that are Made in the USA?

I’m excited about reviewing The Perfect Putting Aid and lowering my golf score this Spring!

The Perfect Putting Aid $139.95 for all 3 pieces or $49.95 for The Putting Line.

How would you like to improve your accuracy off the tee by up to 20%? I know I would. According to a study conducted by IQPLUS Golf Bar, eating one of their bars before a round of golf can increase your accuracy, compared to a traditional protein bar, which showed no improvement. I was intrigued and wanted to put the IQPLUS Golf Bar to the test and see if it could improve my accuracy.

The Science Behind the IQPLUS Golf Bar
The bar is a unique combination of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and the key ingredient Phosphatidylserine -PS (fos-fuh-tie-dul-SEHR-een). Phosphatidylserine enables your brain cells to metabolize glucose and to release and bind with neurotransmitters, all of which is important to learning, memory and other cognitive functions.

We typically ingest about 130 mg of Phosphatidylserine daily, which is found in meat and vegetables. The additional 200 mg of the soy derivative of PS in IQPLUS Golf Bar can in theory improve your concentration and improve your accuracy off the tee.

IQPLUS Golf Bar Look and Taste
The IQPLUS Golf Bar looks like a smaller version of the TWIX candy bar, but with half the calories (140), and loaded with the right blend of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The silky smooth chocolate exterior covers the semi-soft interior which has subtle cappuccino like taste. After eating there is a very faint aftertaste of the Chococcino flavor left on your palate, which isn’t chemically tasting. Overall, the taste and texture will appeal to most people.

Performance
Can eating the IQPLUS Golf Bar increase your concentration levels and improve your accuracy? That’s what I set out to find out. I would eat one bar prior to going to the driving range or a round of golf (twice a week) over a period of 6 weeks. And the results were inconclusive. I found that eating the IQPLUS Golf Bar didn’t make any significant improvement in my accuracy off the tee or concentration level during my test period. Keep in mind that I didn’t eat the bar daily, like in the clinical study mentioned earlier. Even if I did, I’m not sure it would make a difference in improving my concentration or accuracy.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t buy an IQPLUS Golf Bar? Not at all. I think they are some good benefits to eating the bar as a snack during your round of golf or any physical activity. The bar was formulated by a sports nutritionist, so their is a good balance carbohydrates to fat to protein ratio- providing a steady supply of energy. Everyone knows that you need energy when you make the turn on your favorite golf course, and the IQPLUS Golf Bar does deliver in that regard.

It’s one of the reasons the IQPLUS Golf Bar is the “Preferred Nutrition Bar” of the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance, and The PGA Village, Port St. Lucie, Florida. And endorsed by LPGA golfer Stacy Lewis.

Overall, I think the IQPLUS Golf Bar is good alternative to your typical protein bar and provides a good supply of energy during your round.

IQPLUS Golf Bar $29.98 for a dozen 1.2 ounce bars.

The mental game of golf is one of the hardest things to practice, because we often have a million other things on our minds when we address the golf ball. You’ve probably read in your favorite golf publication, that one of the ways to improve your golf game is to visualize your shot. But, can visual imagery really improve your game, especially when it comes to putting?

That’s what Seeitgolf’s iPad/iPod Touch App aims to accomplish, make practicing the mental game easy. The initial Aaron Baddeley Seeitgolf app which we reviewed, was just a movie that you loaded and watched on your iPod/iPhone. What makes the new app different, is that it’s a fully interactive native iPhone/iPad app, broken into three parts: Original film, Audio Training, and Visual Training.

App Features:
The Original Film with Aaron Baddeley, is the exact same version we reviewed prior or Baddeley visualizing his putts, but at a little over 15 minutes, you might not have enough time to watch. That’s where the two new features of this well designed and developed iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad app really shine in my opinion.

Audio Training with the Stan Utley allows you to repeat the sounds of success, by linking the sound of the ball hitting the putter to the ball rattling in the cup. You can listen to one of 9 audio clips of putts of varying distance and breaks (3’, 6’, and 9’, Straight, Left-Right, Right-Left) by ingraining the sound and imagery of success through repetition. I found the audio training feature is great for when you don’t have time to watch the original film with Aaron Baddeley or the Visual Training. It would be cool if you could loop the audio clips, to really immerse yourself in audio training. Imagine falling asleep to a loop of the ball hitting the putter and rattling into the cup, the night before your round or tournament. I bet it would help you visualize success.

How many times have you listened to a song in your head and started visualizing something or day dreamed? For me it’s quite a lot. The Visual Training section is another cool new feature for performance and mental training, where you can associate your favorite song from your iPod/iPhone/iPad song library with one of the 40 different visuals.

The Visual Training feature is what makes this app worth paying $9.99 for a golf training app in my opinion. You start out by selecting one of the 40 putts, broken down by Distance (4’,5’, 6’,8’,9’,12’, 17’,27’) and Camera Angle (top view, down the line, overhead, overhead with path, and right camera angle). Once you select the putt you want to add you just drag it to the right column. You can add as many as you like, up to 10 different putts.

Next you can add a song or songs from your iPod, by clicking on the Music button. Select your songs and press load, and play the music with the visuals you picked in the previous step. The science behind this is to train your mind to associate the song with visual imagery of success. This is quite clever in my opinion and great way to practice the mental game with your putting. What’s cool is that you can save this playlist and share them with your friends via Twitter, facebook, or email.

Will the Seeitgolf App Make you a better putter?
Yes and no. The Seeitgolf app will help you improve practicing visual success with your putting, but it’s not going to correct any technical flaws you have. With that said, the Seeitgolf app did help me improve my visualization with my putting. I liked being able to practice my visual training without actually having to be at the practice putting green. The portability and customization of the app to suit my training needs are what makes this a hole-in-one. Sorry for the cliche, I couldn’t resist!

If you own an iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, or all three, this is a must have golf training app worth purchasing.

Seeitgolf $9.99

iAnalyze Golf Swing App
If you have ever taken golf lessons over the past couple of years, your instructor probably used a video camera and special software to record and analyze your golf swing. With the widespread adoption of the iPhone, you are able to do the same thing with iAnalyze Golf Swing, for a fraction of the cost your golf pro charges, and not have to invest in a video camera and special software.

<!--[if IE]>

How it works
The basic approach of this app, is to break down the golf swing into images of distinct positions in the golf swing for purposes of analysis and comparison with other golfers/images. You can analyze just one photo or a full ten-photo sequence. The app allows you store up to 200 sequences for each golfer and store a golf profile, which can be color coded by type (pro, student, etc.)

If you have an iPhone 3Gs or iPhone 4 you can also record your swing and have it analyzed by iAnalyze Golf Swingand the default Pro Golfer in the app, depending on the type of shot (Driver, Long Irons, Mid Irons, Short Irons, Pitch, Sand, Flop, Chip, Long Putt, Medium Putt, and Short Putt).

Analyze Your Swing
What’s really nice about the iAnalyze Golf Swing, is that for each of the different types of shots, there is a video and photo sequence of each shot, plus a down the line view and face-on view, which is great for learning. The app can be used to build a library of swing sequences used to help you visualize and emulate. The images can come from your phone’s camera or downloaded off the web, which makes it great for learning how to emulate Tiger Wood’s swing.

A really cool feature allows you to compare your swing to another golfer in the app, which is very easy to do and display them side-by-side. And the controls allow you to play each frame of the swing sequence of each golfer for comparison. In addition, you can also draw lines, enter notes or comments on your sequence or the pro golfer you are comparing, just like your golf instructor would. But probably the coolest features had to be the Merge feature, which super imposes your swing sequence over the pro golfer and simulates motion, so you can analyze your swing.

With all these cool ways to analyze your golf swing, you might be thinking that iAnalyze Golf Swing would be a great way to learn how to play golf or forgo golf lessons all together. While you can learn a lot by taking a 5-10 second video of your golf swing, the app isn’t meant to be a substitute for professional golf instruction. I think its a great learning tool to use in between lessons.

The export function of the app makes it very easy to share or post your swing via email, twitter, facebook, etc. The only problem I had with the export function is that I didn’t know that I exported anything after I clicked the “Export” icon. It would be nice if the future version of the app displayed an alert message, otherwise you might end up clicking the “Export” button over and over again.

The app itself has a ton of features which a lot of people are going to like, but I did find that iAnalyze Golf Swing home screen and some of the submenus to be a little bit confusing to use. A perfect example, is on the video sequence screen for my swing I recorded. In the bottom left and right, there are two icons that hide different useful features. The one on the left looks like a fastforward icon, which it is, but it’s for the playback speed of the video. The icon on the right looks like an upload icon, but it’s hiding a ton of useful features like, displaying a grid on your sequence, drawing tools, photo sequence of your video. I would have passed these by, if I didn’t click on them and can be easily corrected with better icons in a future release.

Overall, iAnalyze Golf Swing is full featured app that is great way to leverage the power of the iPhone to help you analyze your swing in between golf lessons. The $9.99 is a bargain for this app, considering what it would cost to buy a video camera and specialty golf swing software for your computer.

iAnalyze Golf Swing $9.99

According to Big Putt 40% of your golf shots are done on the putting green during a round of golf, yet we spend more time practicing our long game. Why? I’m not going to lie, but practicing putting is boring.

<!--[if IE]>

Look and Feel
The Big Putt is 35% larger than (1.95” vs. 1.68”) a regulation golf ball and has the same feel of your normal golf ball. The larger size of the ball is designed to help you learn to accelerate through impact and help you sink those 2ft -8ft putts that we all have a tendency to miss.

Performance
You’ll notice when hitting the Big Putt that if you mishit the ball slightly, it will provide you immediate feedback and go off line. If you don’t accelerate through, the ball will either come up short or go offline when using the Big Putt, which is very important if you want to lower your score and sink more putts.

I also found that using the Big Putt helped me with proper ball alignment and aiming my putt thanks to it’s larger diameter. You place the ball down and easily tell if you have it lined up correctly, which is really nice.

The other benefit of the large size, is it makes the cup look so much smaller and forces you to concentrate on your technique. And when you switch out to your normal golf ball, the hole looks even larger and gives you the confidence that you can’t miss the putt, which is an important part of putting.

Does Big Putt Work?
The fact that it’s just a slightly larger golf ball, makes it it easy to carry in your bag with the included carrying pouch, and take with you to the practice green-eliminating any excuses for not practicing your putting. What I found from using Big Putt over the last 3 weeks is that its made practicing putting more productive and something I want to do, rather than loathe.

I also found that my confidence level has increased when having to make those 2ft-8ft putts, and that I’m more focused on putting stroke as a result. I should point out that Big Putt, is a training aid and intended to help you putt better and be effective with your practice time. The Big Putt is not going to correct any setup or putting mechanic flaws, only a golf professional can help you with correcting those kind of problems.

The Big Putt is competitively priced at $19.99 which includes: 3 Big Putt golf balls, alignment line template, marker, and instructional DVD. I should note the DVD included is one of those mini-DVDs, half the size of a normal DVD, which I couldn’t use with my DVD player. Not a problem since you can view the instructional videos on the the Big Putt website.

Overall, I really enjoyed using the Big Putt and think it’s a very practical putting training aid that can help improve your putting and give you the confidence you need in your short game.

Books

Moment of Glory The Year Underdogs Ruled Golf by John Feinstein

After winning 6 of the 12 Majors from 2000 to 2002, Tiger Woods struggled in 2003. Four unknown players would seize the day, rising to become champions in his wake.

Mike Weir–considered a good golfer but not a great one–triumphed in The Masters, becoming the first Canadian to win a Major. Jim Furyk emerged victorious in the U.S. Open. In the British Open, Ben Curtis became the only player since Francis Ouimet in 1913 to prevail on his first time out, and Shaun Micheel came from nowhere to prevail at the PGA Championship. How does one moment of glory affect the unsung underdog for years to follow?

Feinstein chronicles the champions’ ups and downs, giving readers an insider’s look into how victory (and defeat) can change players’ lives.

In Bad Lies, golf’s wittiest observer, photographer Charles Lindsay, celebrates the hazards and pitfalls of the game. Lindsay stakes out the diabolic border territories that encroach on golf courses–moon-crater bunkers, waist-high fescue grass, murky lake bottoms–to capture the unbelievable my-ball-went-where? moments that make the game so infuriating and so addictive for so many.

This hilarious follow-up to Lindsay’s popular Lost Balls (Little, Brown, 2005) features inspired and gorgeous color photographs, plus larger-than-life pictures of some of the world’s rarest–and oddest–golf balls. Texts include a foreword by outspoken golf commentator Gary McCord, definitions of the game’s offbeat terminology, and a meditation on the golf ball and the immortal soul.

World Golf Hall of Famer and 8 time major championship winner, Tom Watson, and Tom Watson Productions announced today the release of a 2010 comprehensive golf instructional two-DVD set titled ‘Tom Watson – Lessons of a Lifetime’.

The two-DVD set containing close to three hours of golf instruction and an accompanying booklet of 44 lessons was filmed at The Greenbrier Resort, where Watson is Golf Professional Emeritus. This instructional program is the ultimate learning experience, covering all facets of the game-from the grip to full shots, to chipping, putting and the secret of his timeless swing, plus specialty shots including those required in strong wind conditions.

Directed by award-winning Terry Jastrow, ‘Lessons of a Lifetime’ embodies the practical experiences and competitive winning strategies that have earned Watson professional recognition as one of the greatest players of all time. “Tom Watson applies the same sense of determination and purpose in his new DVD instructional set,” says Jastrow, “as he has to his competitive golf game. It’s fifty years of experience from one of the game’s masters.”

Watson ranks 6th on the list of total major championship victories with more wins than Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson. Watson is one of only fourteen players to have won at least three of the four golfing major titles.

About the DVD Set
Encyclopedic in its skill and strategy coverage, ‘Lessons of a Lifetime’ is a defining instructional medium and will be a must for beginning golfers and weekend warriors as well as experienced golfers wanting to step up their game. Watson says, “It’s very important that golfers-whether they are beginners or have played for 50 years-learn and understand the fundamentals. These are the building blocks every golfer needs to have in order to play up to their potential but, more importantly, to have fun.”

From playing in the wind, to hooking and slicing, to fearless putting, Watson breaks them down in an easy-to-understand manner. Golfers can begin applying these lessons of a lifetime the next time they stand on the first tee with their friends. Watson teaches his lessons of his lifetime as if golfers are there with him.

“I was fortunate to have received excellent instruction early in my life,” says Watson, a Kansas City, Missouri native who shows no signs of slowing down. “When I was 6 years old, my father, Ray Watson, cut down a hickory-shafted 5-iron, then proceeded to teach me the grip, and how to hook and slice the ball-all the basic fundamentals of the game. It’s all this knowledge I’ve accumulated that I’d like to share with golfers in ‘Lessons of a Lifetime.’ ”

Consistency, contact, alignment, firmness of grip, pivot points, release, rhythm and legendary coach, Harvey Penick’s “dead-aim” philosophy are all covered in the two comprehensive DVDs. Watson’s instruction comes across in an easy-to-understand manner making it seem your standing right beside him on the tee or green.

Watson, a graduate of Stanford University, was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988 and owns 39 PGA TOUR victories, including five British Opens, two Masters and one U.S. Open. The latter victory was keyed by Watson’s 71st-hole birdie chip-in at Pebble Beach, a shot many historians consider to be the shot of the 20th century.

Last year Watson pulled off one of sports history’s most-memorable moments when he made an incredible bid for his sixth Open Championship title, taking Stewart Cink to a four-hole playoff at Turnberry. Four of Watson’s seven top-10 finishes on the 2009 Champions Tour came in major championships.

This year Watson opened his season by teaming with Jack Nicklaus to win the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game. The following week, Watson birdied the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke victory over Champions Tour rookie sensation Fred Couples in the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

Watson has long-standing professional relationships with Adams Golf, Golf Digest, The Greenbrier Resort, MasterCard and Polo Ralph Lauren.

Supports a Good Cause
The two-DVD set finishes with a moving tribute to Watson’s ‘caddie for life’, Bruce Edwards, who passed away in April 2004 from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The tribute concludes with a song written and composed by Watson’s stepdaughter, Kelly Paige. A portion of the sales of ‘Lessons of a Lifetime’ will go to help find a cure for this dreaded, life-ending disease.

The Tom Watson ‘Lessons of a Lifetime’ DVD set is now available for $49.95 at select golf and sporting goods retailers, pro shops and on-line at www.tomwatsondvd.com.

The set is also available to purchase by telephone at 1-800-993-5589.
