When I play a round of golf at my local course I usually like to walk and carry my standbag, this wasn’t a problem for me last year, because I played mostly par 3 courses. This season I’ve been playing more 18 hole and long 9 hole golf courses, and hauling a full set of golf clubs can be a lot of work, and hard on my back. The solution to this problem was finding a golf pushcart that was lightweight, sturdy, and folded down to a compact size. And that golf pushcart is the Clicgear 2.0 Pushcart, “The Next Generation in Golf Pushcart Technology.”

Look and Feel
One of the first things you’ll notice about the Clicgear 2.0 pushcart is how compact the cart is when you take it out of the box, measuring only 13″ x 15″ and 24″ tall. Its so nice and compact you can easily store the cart in the trunk of your car with your golf clubs and shoe bag, without having to worry about running out of trunk space. The compact size is also very useful when storing the cart in your home when its not being used. The cart weighs approximately 18 lbs, and is made of a aircraft grade aluminum and has a powdered coated frame that resists scratching and scuffs. The aluminum frame gives the cart a very rugged look, similar to that of a mountain bike and give you the added confidence that this cart can go through all types of terrain. This isn’t your average golf pushcart, because it doesn’t look wimpy like the ones you rent at the golf course, and its in a league of its own in terms of features and styling. I received the Black version of the Clicgear 2.0, which is its most popular selling color, with Silver and Red rounding out the top three selling colors.

Performance
For the past month I’ve been testing the Clicgear 2.0 pushcart and I have to say I’m very impressed how well this pushcart performs. One of the key selling points and improvements in the second generation of the Clicgear cart is how easily the cart folds and unfolds. To unfold the cart you only have to perform five basic steps to have the cart unfolded and ready to use (watch the video to see me fold and unfold the Clicgear cart). The same holds true for folding the cart back up, it’s extremely easy to do, in very little time (under 60 seconds). The last thing I want to do is spend a long time unpacking and packing up their pushcart, that would stress me out and put in a bad mood. Playing golf is about having a good time, and no one wants to waste their time trying to get their pushcart unfolded, or worse miss your tee time. Clicgear got it right! Another major improvement from the previous model is move from tube tires to tubeless tires. This is done to improve the reliability of the tires (say goodbye to flat tires) and they also gave the tires lightly wider and flatter profile. This was done to improve the traction on the course and reduce damage caused by the tires in wet conditions. I tested the Clicgear 2.0 cart in wet conditions and the tires did not leave any tire marks/grooves when going over the greens or the fairway and did not get mud and dirt caught in the tire treads. On gravel, sand, pavement, uphill, etc the cart moves so effortlessly and it can easily be maneuvered with one hand. The new Clicgear Model 2.0 Wheels are made of fibre reinforced plastic and are designed with the opposed 3 x 3 spoke design that makes them mould balanced. What this means is that they are much stronger and roll true. This is something you can’t say for wheels made with bicycle spokes, which can become untrue over time and wobbly. The handle at the top of the cart is padded for comfort and also features a socket to screw in the umbrella holder that is included with the cart and a convenient umbrella holder on the side of the handle. Next to the handle you’ll find the one handed brake system, that allows you easily lock and unlock the front wheel of the cart. This is a great feature, because I’ve seen other golfer’s have their pushcart and clubs go crashing into a pond at my local course, because they didn’t have a brake on their pushcart. The cup holder is next to the brake handle and can accommodate any standard size water bottle or beverage. You secure your water bottle with the bungee cord of the cup holder. The next major component of the Clicgear 2.0 cart is the console. The console door is held closed by a magnet, so you don’t have to worry about the door accidentally opening. The console can hold up to three golf balls in the provided slot and any other small items in the main compartment. This is especially nice for storing a bag of golf tees, car keys, or energy bars. You can also store your scorecard on the interior of the console door, by sliding it under the bungee cord if the weather is bad. The exterior of the console door also features a bungee cord to store your pencil and another bungee for your scorecard, when the weather is nice. On the very end of the console portion door are three holes to hold your golf tees, which is a nice feature. I liked not having to reach into my pocket or my golf bag to get to my tees, a real time saver. On the either side of the console door are two d-rings that you can clip on a golf towel or a golf brush for easy access, which I found to be well suited for shorter golf towels. Adjusting the tilt of the upper portion of the Clicgear is easily accomplished by turning the adjustment handle on the side of the cart, allowing you to customize the cart setup. Securing your bag on the Clicgear 2.0 cart couldn’t be easier, and this is done by using the two bungee bag straps at the top and bottom of the cart. The bag straps are big enough and adjustable to accommodate a standard cart bag or stand bag without any problems. I found it was very easy to strap in my standbag in a matter of seconds, without having to worry about my bag not being secure.

If your on the market for a golf pushcart that is compact, folds and unfolds easily, and sturdy, look no further than the Clicgear 2.0. The new improved features of the Clicgear 2.0 Pushcart make it one of the best golf pushcarts I’ve used and you should pick one up.

Back in July, LPGA Tour Pro Paula Creamer won the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic presented by Kroger, by two shots, playing the Pink Precept Lady iQ180 all four rounds. The victory is her third this year and fourth since switching to the Precept Pink Lady iQ 180 golf ball. So what makes the Precept Lady iQ 180 different from other golf balls on the market? This is what my wife Karen set out to find out by playing Precept Lady iQ 180 golf balls for the past 3 weeks.

Look and Feel

Karen’s first impression of the Lady iQ 180 was the cool translucent honeycomb appearance of the golf ball and the shadows that the dimples created around its exterior. She recently noticed that the dimples on the Brilliant Clear version , have a striking resemblance to Beijing’s swim venue the “Watercube.” But don’t let its cool looks fool you into believing that this is your avergae lady’s golf ball.

Performance

Marketed towards women with slower swing speeds, seeking optimum perfomance all around the course, the Precept Lady iQ 180 lives up to its billing as, “The Softest Lady’s ball on the market.” Off the tee, the Lady IQ 180 performs flawlessy, whether your hitting a driver or an iron. The Lady iQ 180 uses Seamleass Cover Technology, giving Karen’s tee shots a consistent and straighter flight everytime, unlike any other ball she has played before. The amount of carry her ball would roll after they landed was quite nice, making her shots carry much further than normal. Even from the fairway or rough Karen’s shots traveled on a straight path, this is in part because the Lady iQ 180 golf ball utilizes technology that reduces the amount of execessive sidespin, which can cause your ball to slice or push. In and aorund the green the Lady iQ 180 performed very well, providing the right amount of spin and control for her chip’s and pitch’s. Putting was another area where the Precept Lady iQ 180 shined, providing great feel and feedback when making long and short putts. Overall, Karen was really impressed by the Precept Lady iQ 180 and how much a difference a womens specific golf ball can make. “I always thought, all golf balls were the same, but I stand corrected.” If your in the market for a great all around womens golf ball, pick up a box of the Precept Lady iQ 180’s, you won’t be dissappointed.

If you watched the 2008 U.S. Open Championship, you saw one of the greatest matches in golf history between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. One of the keys to Rocco Mediate’s success was his putting and his use of the Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth Putter. You may not have the putting ability of Rocco, but you can become very effective at your short game with Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth Putter. I’ve been testing out the White Hot XG Sabertooth (34″) for a month now and I’m very impressed how this putter performed.

Look and Feel
The first thing that sets this putter apart from other mallet putters on the market is the radical headshape, that resembles the fangs of a Sabertooth Tiger. Constructed of stainless steel with a brushed matte finish, the overall look of the Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth, is quite striking, even if it slightly reminded me of the Batman logo. The Sabertooth Dual Fangs position 38% of the putters weight to the outside of putter for a high MOI design, which results in more stability and accuracy. According to Odyssey, “The design produces an MOI level higher than our most stable 2-Ball putters.” I’ve played a round of golf with an Odyssey 2-Ball putter and found this to be an accurate statement. The other key feature of this putter are the Aiming Channels inside the fangs that make lining up your putts easier, coupled with a textured multi-layer insert. Another great design feature of the Aiming Channels is you can also scoop your ball off the green, eliminating the need to bend down and pick up the ball. The stainless steel double-bend and full-offset shaft gives the White Hot XG Sabertooth a balanced swing in your putting stroke.

Performance
Does the Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth live up to its billing? Absolutely! Inspired by multi-layer golf ball technology, the White Hot XG is Odyssey’s latest advancement that utilizes a multi-layer insert for phenomenal performance on the green. It combines two materials with different properties to take the level of feedback, feel and distance control to an all-new level. In my tests the first thing I noticed immediately is how the ball would roll effortlessly across the green, with only a soft touch. This can be attributed to the multi-layer insert of the White Hot XG, which gives the putter a nice responsive feel. The insert is constructed of an elastomer core based material, which makes it soft for great feel, and highly resilient. Another key feature of the insert is the textured area of the impact zone, that clearly highlights the sweet spot and enhances feel when your putting long or short distances. It took a little getting used to the soft insert, because my Nike IC 20-20 putter face makes a loud “ping” sound when you hit it on the sweet spot, compared to the White Hot XG Sabertooth that makes very little noise on contact. The exterior portions of the insert feature a thin outer striking surface - Firm for fine-tuned responsiveness. The High MOI of the Dual Fangs also prevents the face of the putter from twisting, making your puts more stable and accurate. Any help I can get with my putting, is welcomed and you’ll appreciate this feature. On long putts, its incredibly easy to get the ball rolling smoothly with out much effort and even on short three footers, draining those putts is a breeze thanks to the Aiming Channels. Overall the combination of High MOI, Aiming Channels, and Multi-layer insert, make this one of the most responsive putters I’ve ever used. I recommend you pick up the Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth putter, you won’t be disappointed.

Specs
Lengths: 33″, 34″, 35″
Loft: 3*
Lie: 70*
Offset: Full-Shaft

FiZ, which gets its name from the “fizzing” sound made when its sprayed on surfaces, uses a scientifically formulated solution if 98% water and 2% lifting agent that is guaranteed to be more effective than saliva at cleaning golf clubs. FiZ comes packaged in a patented designed lightweight cylindrical container that’s 5 inches tall, 1 inch in diameter and is made from 100% recyclable aluminum and plastic. The cap can easily be clipped to your golf bag or golf towel for easy access and use. The main cylinder has dimples that replicate the look and feel of a golf ball and also help with gripping with a glove. Multiple small polypropylene bristles at the bottom of the cylinder help get in between the clubface grooves and ball dimples to clean your clubs and balls.

“Many golfers don’t realize the impact even slightly dirty equipment can have on their game,” says Heap, FiZGOLF’s founder and president. “Grimy grooves and dirty dimples counteract today’s precision golf equipment; they can literally steal yards and accuracy from a shot. FiZ will get your gear clean, and clean gear will get you a better game.”

Performance

In my tests over the last few weeks, FiZ has lived up to its reputation at cleaning my clubs and golf balls during my round of golf. The fizzing action of the cleaning solution, along with the bristles do an excellent job of getting grass stains and mud off my golf balls and the grooves of my clubs. Giving my golf clubs and balls a “scientific spit shine.” You’ll see the fizzing action immediately after the solution hits your clubface or ball, going to work on whatever is covering it. All you have to do next is begin to scrub away with the bristles on the bottom of the FiZ cylinder and wipe with your golf towel and that’s it! Your equipment is nice and clean. The only tricky part with the FiZ is aiming it correctly and spraying the proper amount of solution, but I think this is something you can get a feel for overtime. “It takes a clean ball, a clean club face and a clean swing to optimize your gear’s performance,” says Heap. “With FiZ, you’ll at least get two of the three.” I have to agree with Aaron on this one, any help I can get with my golf game is added bonus.

FiZ will last for more than 350 sprays or over 100 holes of golf.

I’m really excited about this innovative product by FiZGolf and recommend you pick one up and at $9.99, it’s quite a bargain and makes a great gift or stocking stuffer.

FiZ retails for $9.99 www.fizgolf.com

On July 24, 2008 I had the opportunity to attend the second annual Puma Open in Chicago, IL at Harborside International. The Puma Open is not your typical golf outing, where you play a standard Scramble, instead your four-person team must compete in a nine hole Scramble with special “Puma Open rules” on each hole.

What are those rules?

Here is a quick breakdown of my favorite holes I played at the Puma Open:

Hole # 10 Don Julio Know Your Tequila: Tee off with vintage wooden driver. A word of advice, don’t have Margaritas on an empty stomach and expect to play well. I had a blast playing this hole with a nice buzz from the Don Julio Margarita, which didn’t help hide the fact that I couldn’t hit the vintage wooden driver to save my life.

Hole # 12 Draw: Draw a card from the dealer and play with that club ONLY for the entire hole..this includes putting. I drew a nine iron on this really long hole and it was the first time I ever putted with my nine iron.

Hole # 16 On the Clock: Team score on this hole is based on your time-score does not matter. The team to complete this hole in the shortest time wins a prize. This hole was so much fun to play, even with two players. What made this hole really cool, is that your given a RCA portable video camera to tape the hole. We didn’t have the shortest time, but we had fun playing this hole.

Hole # 17 Almost Golf “Hail Mary”: One player from your team will hit Almost Golf balls to their teammates to catch in a designated area. This hole was another one of my favorite holes to play, watch the video and see how its done.

I’ve never had so much fun playing nine holes of golf before in my entire life, from drinking Margaritas, playing an entire hole with one club, and sprinting across the golf course. After all this excitement on the course, you begin the second part of the event which included an awesome dinner buffet and casino night.

Casino Night and Gaming

The second part of the Puma Open consists of the casino night with gaming. Each team starts out with the same amount of chips ($500 Puma Dollars per player) in the casino portion of the event. Each player has a choice of various table games to play, from Black Jack, Texas Hold-em, and Roulette. I opted to use my Puma Dollars to play Black Jack and ended up with $3000 in Puma Dollars at the end of the evening, way short of the winning team that had $67, 000 in Puma Dollars. My team would have done better but my teammate Mark was not a very good Black Jack player, considering he never played before. I had a blast at playing Black Jack during the casino portion of the event, it reminded me of being in Las Vegas, but without my own money on the line.

Prizes

At the end of the evening prizes were given to teams with best overall score, most Puma Dollars at the casino event, and overall winning team. The winning team from Chicago Puma Open is placed in a random drawing with the other five winners of the other regional events for a chance of winning the grand prize trip to Maxim Bungalows in the Dominican Republic.

Bottom line, I had a blast attending the Puma Open in Chicago, IL and you will too. It was an event like no other. I really can’t wait to attend next year’s Puma Open when comes through Chicago again. If there’s a Puma Open in your area, make sure to register your team, you won’t regret taking part in an excellent event, put on by a great company. Future Puma Open’s include the following locations: Boston, MA August 16th, Fort Lauderdale, FL September 19th, and Austin TX October 3rd.

If you are the type of golfer who is looking to get tour-caliber distance and ball launch conditions, then look no further than the TaylorMade Tour Burner driver. “Tour pros hit the ball long because their launch conditions are comprised of fast ball speed with a high launch angle and low spin-rate,” said Sean Toulon, TaylorMade’s executive vice president of innovation and product creation. “The Tour Burner driver is engineered to help the average golfer generate tour-caliber launch conditions in order to promote tour-caliber distance.”

Over the pass three weeks I’ve been testing the TaylorMade Tour Burner driver and the results have been nothing short of spectacular.

Look and Feel

The first thing you’ll notice about the Tour Burner is the large size of the sole of the club which is larger than the crown. This is part of the new Dual Crown technology, which is crucial to the driver’s performance. A clearly delineated groove encircles the extra large clubhead, separating the crown and the sole, giving the club a unique look. An advantage of having a smaller crown is the reduction in weight, making the Tour Burner 18% lighter than the crown of Taylor Made’s Burner Driver. Also crucial is the Ultra-Thin Wall casting technology, which allows the clubhead walls to measure as little as .55 millimeters thick. The two weight saving technologies create an exceptionally low Center of Gravity (CG) which results in a higher launch angle and reduced backspin. This is something you’ll immediately notice when you hold the Tour Burner, it’s simply amazing how light such a big club feels in your hands and how you get that optimal mid-high launch angle of your drives. I normally play a Callaway BigBertha 460 Driver and compared to the Tour Burner, it feels heavy and I don’t get as consistent results with the flight trajectory of my drives.

The exceptionally high MOI of the Tour Burner driver head makes it extremely stable and forgiving on off-center hits. During my tests at both the driving range and on the golf course my off-center hits still went straight and long, thanks to the high MOI. That benefit, combined with the advantage provided by TaylorMade’s patented Inverted Cone Technology (ICT), result in even higher ball speed on off-center hits. Inverted Cone Technology is characterized by a shallow cone milled directly onto the inner side of the clubface and changes the way the face behaves at impact so that a larger area of the face delivers higher ball speed. Higher ball speeds leads to the tour-caliber distance we all desire.

The Tour Burner also features TaylorMade’s SuperFast technology, embodied by the combination of a Fujikura SuperFast 60-gram shaft that combines low torque with a stiff .350″ tip, an extra-light Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip and a club-length of 45.5″. As mentioned before the club feels so light in your hand and looks svelte. Together these premium components promote faster swing speed for increased distance.

Performance
When I got my Tour Burner driver, I went directly to the driving range to see how well the driver performed vs. my BigBertha. My initial reaction after hitting my first ball was: “WOW!”. I could not believe my eyes when I saw how far and straight my drives went. I normally can only hit my BigBertha 460 driver about 200 yards on a good day, but with the Tour Burner driver I was able to launch the ball consistently 225-230 yards. I was blown away at those results. Another thing I noticed, was that the flight path of my shots was consistent every time, flying the perfect trajectory, even on off-center hits. This was in part to the high MOI and Inverted Cone Technology which promote stability and higher ball speeds off the square face of the club. The low center of gravity causes the ball to launch at a higher angle and reduces the amount of backspin on the ball. The result is increased carry and distance.

On the Golf course, the results were identical. I found myself very confident that I would be able to drive the ball well every time I stepped into the tee box.. The Tour Burner’s large sole serves a second valuable purpose by creating an expansive address footprint that promotes increased confidence, and the advanced clubhead geometry that delivers the kind of great impact sound and feel for which TaylorMade drivers are famous. I always heard that TaylorMade produced excellent golf clubs, especially their drivers, and the Tour Burner Driver has made me a believer. I now welcome the opportunity to tee up the ball and blast away with TaylorMade Tour Burner driver whenever I get a chance. The TaylorMade Tour Burner will now become my driver of choice and will be replacing my BigBertha. So if your in the market for a tour-caliber distance driver that lives up to the hype of the #1 driver in golf, pickup a TaylorMade Tour Burner Driver.

David Leadbetter is one of the most well known and respected swing coaches in the game of golf today, and that’s evident by the number of tour professionals he coaches; from Nick Price, Charles Howell III, Michele Wie, and others. Not all of us are lucky enough to have access to David Leadbetter and learn from his many years of experience on building a solid swing, but now you can in the privacy of your own home with the SwingSetter Pro™ training aid.

The SwingSetter Pro™ is the second generation of the already popular SwingSetter, but with one major difference, it allows you to hit golf balls, something you could not do with the original SwingSetter. The real-time feedback of hitting golf balls with the SwingSetter Pro™ allows you develop great technique and improvement in your game. I’ve been testing the SwingSetter Pro for several weeks and the results have been very positive, it has really helped improve my tempo of my golf swing.

Look and Feel

Similar to the original SwingSetter, the SwingSetter Pro™ helps to develop the four basic fundamentals of the golf swing: Grip, Swing Plane, Proper Release and Tempo. The SwingSetter Pro takes those four fundamentals and adds real-time feedback as you are now able to hit a ball! With the length and lie of standard 6 iron, the SwingSetter Pro™ offers the instant feedback that every golfer looks for.

The grip is one of the biggest problem areas for golfers and the cause of numerous swing faults. The molded Golf Pride grip will help place your hands on the club correctly every time. This is done by the use of innovative fins and outlines for the pinky fingers and thumbs that ensure a great grip. I really liked the molded grip, not only was it very comfortable to use, but it was a great visual reminder to see what a proper grip looks like. I really wished I had this when I first started playing golf, it would have saved me from countless swing errors as a result of a poor grip.

For a consistent swing, you need to be able to set/hinge your wrists properly on the backswing and keep them on plane. The SwingSetter Pro™ allows you to check your swing plane by using the Plane Pointer at the end of the grip. To use the Plane Pointer, simply extend the pointer prior to swinging and check to see that at the halfway back position the Plane Pointer is aimed down toward the ground and on or slightly inside the target line. This is a great feature to have, because it gives you instant feedback on whether your club is on plane or not.

You hear a lot about swing tempo and how it is important to a good golf swing, but you may have no idea how to tell if your tempo is too slow. This is what the single adjustable magnetic ball is used for in the SwingSetter Pro™. It has three resistance settings: 1 offering the least resistance and 3 being the highest. This promotes correct setting on the backswing. Hearing the snapping of the magnetic ball along with the impact of an actual golf ball, you will develop leverage in the swing so you can accelerate the club aggressively through impact. The audio feedback of the magnetic ball snapping will help with improving your swing tempo; a key component of a good golf swing. Sensory feedback is very helpful when learning and it makes a huge difference, especially with the mechanics of the golf swing. This is particularly useful, because is difficult to tell if you are setting your wrists too late by practicing with a regular golf club, unless you have someone watching you.

The ability to hit golf balls with SwingSetter Pro™ is one of the best features, becuase you can now practice the four fundamentals, plus get instant feedback by hitting golf balls.

Performance

In order to get the most out of the SwingSetter Pro™, practice at least twice a week for consistency by doing the following drills:

Drill # 1 Halfway Back: Take the club back to the “L” position, snapping the the magnetic ball as you bring the clubhead back. Check the Plane Pointer as you hold the “L” position to make sure it is pointing on a path parallel to your target line.

Drill # 2 Halfway Down: Make a complete backswing. As you begin downward toward impact, hold your position as your leading arm returns to parallel. Check to make sure the Plane Pointer is pointing on a path parallel to your target.

Drill # 3 Swing to Finish: Make a complete backswing and check your swing plane and swing all the way through to a complete swing. You can tee up a golf ball and hit it while doing this drill.

Drill # 4 “L” to “L”: Make a compact movement, swinging the club back to halfway to form the “L” between your arms (see Drill # 1) and club. Once you reach the “L” position, continue the swing forward, striking the golf ball and continuing your swing until you form a second “L” position with your arms and golf club.

Drill # 5 Hit Golf Balls: Once you have completed drills 1 through 4, you can begin to make full swings with the SwingSetter Pro™ and your own golf clubs.

I have to say that after using the SwingSetter Pro™ and following the drills, I’ve seen my swing tempo improve and have developed greater consistency in my swing. I think if you are a golfer who is looking for a complete swing training aid, that provides real-time feedback, you should do yourself a favor and buy the SwingSetter Pro™.

About a month ago I had the opportunity to play one of the most serene and amazing golf courses in the Southwest, at the Boulders Golf Club North Course. The Boulders is a 2008 Golf Magazine Platinum Medal Award winning resort, featuring two stunning and challenging golf courses. Both golf courses are nestled in the tranquil beauty of the high Sonoran desert and the 12-million year old granite boulder formations that dot the landscape.

On my visit I was able to play the North Course, a 6,811-yard, par 72 Jay Morrish designed championship golf course. The North Course is the older of the two courses and features bent grass with spectacular views of Black Mountain as the course meanders through the Boulders community. Both courses are built right into the desert foothills and offer breathtaking panoramas - including stunning boulder formations, striking Sonoran Desert sunsets and natural desert terrain.

The North Course

One of the first things I noticed at this course was the beauty of my surroundings, the background of the mountains and rock formations make this course unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Living in Chicago, I don’t get to play in such beautiful and natural surroundings like these. The terrain varies from hole-to-hole, the first hole is a challenging 513 yard Par 5, featuring some of the nastiest desert brush and cactus directly in front of the tee box. Not only do you have to clear that type of hazard once, you have to clear a similar hazard a second time, 181 yards from the pin. Even the par 3 holes are very challenging, the 142 yard par 3 6th hole is a heavily guarded pin that is surrounded by bunkers directly in front, to the left, and behind the green. The 18th hole is a 424 yard par 4 that has pretty wide open fairway which doglegs right and features a water hazard on the left side of the upper part of the fairway. What I loved about playing at Boulders is how each hole was challenging, yet fun at the same time. My only advice to anyone playing the Boulders North or South Course is bring plenty of extra golf balls. It’s so easy to lose your ball when you hit it into the surrounding desert brush that is found on every hole.

Amenities

Boulders Golf Club offers a wide array of amenities that make this a premiere golf destination.

Full range facilities including an all-grass driving range, chipping greens, practice bunkers and putting greens.

Golf Academy with lessons from Donald Crawley, ranked by Golf Magazine as one of the Top 100 Teachers in America. He is also recognized by Golf Digest as one of the Best Teachers in Arizona.

Full Service Pro Shop; locker rooms, and access to the golf club swimming pool.

At the end of your round enjoy a message at The Golden Door Spa.

The staff at Boulders were top notch. From the starter to the cart girls, everyone was extremely friendly and helpful.

The next time your in Scottsdale, Arizona, make sure to book a tee time at the Boulders Golf Club, you’ll be glad you did. I can’t wait to return and play the South Course.

On my first trip to Scottsdale, Arizona this June I stayed at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa and one of the to-do items for this trip was to play as much golf as possible. I was able to do so without leaving the resort by playing at the Wildfire Golf Club located on the JW Marriott property. The Wild Fire Golf Club features two 18-hole championship golf courses, one designed by three-time Masters and three-time British Open champion Nick Faldo, and the other designed by Arnold Palmer. The par-72 7,145 yard Arnold Palmer course is the original golf course of the Wildfire Golf Club and was was opened in 1997, 5 years before the JW resort. When the resort was being built Marriott agreed to have another course built and designed by Nick Faldo but only if the Wildfire Golf Club allowed hotel guests access to both courses. On this trip I planned on playing both courses, but the Arnold Palmer Course was closed for repairs, so I only played the Faldo Course.

The Faldo Course

The 18-hole, par-71 Faldo Course is carved into the Sonoran desert and features a total of 6,846 yards, with very wide open fairways, surrounded by incredible views of the McDowell Mountains, Camelback Mountain, and Piestewa Peak. The course is the more scenic of the two Wildfire courses and meanders around the JW Marriott Desert Ridge property. The Faldo Course sits on a 174-acre site that offers a slight variation from the typical desert-themed courses. For instance, the course has Bentgrass greens. This is a nice feature because it provides a much smoother and truer putting surface. It is also is something you don’t find at other area courses, typical greens in Arizona have Bermuda grass, and are not as forgiving. Another interesting feature of the Faldo Course is the placement of the 106 sand bunkers, which are reminiscent of the Australian sand belt courses of Nick Faldo’s homeland. The bunker placement becomes very evident when you play the 15th hole, where the narrow green is surrounded by eight bunkers and also on the 16th hole, where the green is protected by six dramatic bunkers. I feel this makes the course quite challenging and fun, allowing you to really practice your sand game.

Amenities

The Wildfire Golf Club also offers a full range of amenities, including: an all-grass driving range, putting and chipping greens, an enormous green-side bunker (really deep), and state-of-the-art Global Positioning Satellite System(GPS) with CBS Sport-line updates streamed to each golf cart.

The E-Z-GO golf carts all come equipped with the Informer GPS system, featuring a 10.4 inch LCD display. This is a really nice feature and more courses should begin to invest in this technology, because it can really speed up the pace of play.

The GPS system gives you the following features:

Detailed mappping of the Faldo and Palmer courses

Precise yardages for tee shots and approach shots; I verified this with my SkyCaddie SG5 GPS

Communication between the Golf Shop and the golf carts; A cool feature is that it lets you know if your keeping up with the pace of play by displaying your pace as “On Time”.

Full service Golf Shop that was recognized as one of the “Top 100 Golf Shops in America” by Golf World. The 2,500 square-foot shop offers golf apparel and the latest equipment from Nike and Callaway.

At the end of your round enjoy a meal at Meritage Steakhouse at the Wildfire Golf Club, offering sweeping views of greens and fairways.

Overall, I really enjoyed playing golf at the Wildfire Golf Club. The staff and starters were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to going back and playing the Palmer Course on my next trip to Arizona.

Do you ever find yourself during a round of golf, wondering why you always hit your fairway woods or hybrids fat? Or why you keep popping up your tee shots? When Bad Things Happen to Bad Golfers by Gary Pearson and T.J. Tomasi, looks to answer those questions and the 150 most troublesome shots in golf. Unlike other golf books, that focus on shots and techniques, this book provides proven solutions to specific problems that are easy to understand and execute. The book is a golf survival guide meant to carried in your bag, and help solve your golf problems right on the course-before your next shot.

Five Faces
The book shows you the “Five Faces of the Perfect Club,” a concept that helps you hit the ball out of any lie, from anywhere on the course, even if you don’t have a world-class swing. What are the “Five Face of the Perfect Club”? The Five Faces is an instructional concept developed by T.J. Tomasi, that refers to combination of clubface positions (Square, Open, Closed, Hooded, and Laid Back), plus 3 ball positions (Forward, Middle, and Back), and 3 shoulder positions (Open, Square, and Closed). You can use any one of the forty-five positions to get you out of any predicament on the golf course. Once the five-faces concept is understood, the golfer can move to the second part of the book, which is a situation-by-situation description of just about everything that can go wrong on the golf course. The rest of the book is divided into four parts, each representing the four main sections of the golf course: the tee, the fairway, the short game, and the putting green.

One thing you’ll notice is that many of the problems and solutions in the book do overlap with one another, which can lead to repetition and referencing of previous solutions to the problem at hand. While I did find this to be annoying at times, it does provide an advantage of providing a variety of solutions to problems that are similar, but not identical. For example, if your hitting your irons fat, but also topping your drives, you most likely have a weight shift problem. As mentioned earlier, the book is meant to be carried in your bag, I found the book to be a little to big to carry in my golf bag. On top of that, you’d probably get a few strange looks, if you pulled the book out of your bag after you hit a bad shot. I know I’d feel very self-conscious about using this book on the course. It would be nice if they offered a pocket sized version of the book that would fit in you shirt pocket or better yet have flash card version of the 150 scenarios that you could easily take with you. Overall I enjoyed reading the book and found some great tips for some troublesome scenarios I encounter often when I play golf. I’d recommend picking up a copy, even as post round reference and make your own flash cards to carry in your bag.
