It’s funny how in life, what’s old is new and what’s new is old, and this is evident with the new Cleveland Golf Classic line of drivers. The Cleveland Classic driver takes its cues from the old persimmon drivers of golf’s past, with its color scheme and sole design, that reminded me of the old wood driver from my first set of golf clubs. But, don’t let its old school style fool you, this driver is packed with performance features you’d expect in a titanium driver.

Look and Feel
What I love about the Cleveland Classic is its pear-shaped profile, that most golfers will find aesthetically pleasing at address. And what’s also really cool is how gold color trapezoid on the center of face further adds to the retro look, but also serves as an alignment aid.

While the Classic feels really light when you pick it up, don’t let that fool you. Cleveland Golf engineers, created a clubhead that features a traditional weighted head at 199g.The mass in the clubhead helps promote power and forgiveness, without slowing down your swing. Other factors that lend to its ultralite feel are what is called RightWeight Fitting.

RightWeight fitting is a combination of multiple factors: unique grip, shaft, and clubhead to achieve a specific performance. That’s why the Cleveland Classic is available in three different models: Classic 270, Classic 290, and Classic Tour. This is great, because not every golfer has different needs. For example, The Classic 270 (model tested) has a total club weight of 270 grams. This helps generate increased club head speed for maximum distance with the same swing effort.

Performance
The Cleveland Classic driver has the largest and deepest face ever produced by Cleveland Golf. This results in giving the average player one of the largest effective hitting areas and hot ball flight. You can crush your drives with the Cleveland Classic and it produces a really nice mid-high trajectory ball flight. What I really liked is how easy it is to work the ball and shape my shots with the Classic driver.

In terms of forgiveness the Cleveland Classic doesn’t disappoint. The large face uses MaxCOR2 technology for added distance and forgiveness on off-center hits. Please keep in mind that while your drive may go off target left or right, your misses will not be as severe. Will your drive go as long on a miss-hit? Of course not. But it won’t be as bad of a miss. I’ll take that any day of the week!

Overall, the Cleveland Classic driver is one of my favorite drivers from Cleveland Golf. It’s retro style, large deep face, and RightWeigt fitting technology make this a driver worth checking out. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Cleveland Classic.

Cleveland Classic Driver available Mid-February 2012. Pre-order now!

$299.99 (Classic™ 270, Classic™ 290); $379.99 (Classic™ Tour).

TaylorMade Golf today improved its flagship PENTA golf ball franchise with the announcement of the PENTA TP3, a three-piece, tour caliber golf ball designed to increase spin without sacrificing distance and priced accessibly at $34.99.

Similar to the PENTA TP5, the TP3 model has the same tour-proven cast urethane cover material which results in an incredibly soft golf ball that that will perform beautifully from tee to green. It was engineered for the golfer who could benefit from a ball that spins more – specifically on their long and mid-irons.

“Golfers are all different and require variations in their equipment to best suit their games,” said John Kawaja, TaylorMade executive vice president. “The added spin from the TP3 will offer more control for a wider range of golfers while maintaining distance off the tee. Engineering a product with Tour-level performance at a lower price point is a huge plus for the consumer.”

In an effort to produce exceptional feel, maximum speed, and spin control with a three-piece multilayered ball, TaylorMade golf ball engineers had to optimize the core, mantle and cover materials. The PENTA TPs proprietary REACT core technology allows for lower driver spin with added speed to create longer ball flights with the driver. It also increases driver ball speed and lowers driver spin, but on mid and short irons works together with the durable, thin cast urethane cover to create increased spin without sacrificing distance off the tee.

The new PENTA TP3 will be available at retail March 3, 2012 for $34.99 per dozen.

Cobra AMP Driver
COBRA is excited to announce the new AMP Driver featuring E9 Face Technology with dual roll and AMPTM Speed Tuning, delivering customized distance and accuracy to golfers around the world. The AMP Driver also brings color and attitude to the golf course with black PVD and vibrant orange details on the shaft, club head and grip.

The AMP Driver also features Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT), providing golfers with the option to set the face angle as Open, Neutral or Closed to optimize ball flight for better distance and accuracy. The Aldila RIP® Speed Tuned shafts have a progressive weight design and El flex profiles that customize performance for various swing speeds. AMP Speed Tuning works in conjunction with the shaft to optimize each loft differently to deliver the best performance for a given club head speed. The premium Lamkin® R.E.L. 3Gen® Grip is vibrant orange to match the cub head design, packing the AMP Driver with style, flair and technology to help improve a golfer’s game.

The AMP Driver is also available in an offset design to reduce the effects of a slice as well as provide improved distance and accuracy. The AMP Offset Driver squares the head more quickly through impact to reduce the effects of a slice. The unique crown alignment feature also helps golfers aim the driver on target.

E9 Face Technology with dual roll
COBRA’s E9 Face Technology with dual roll utilizes an elliptical shape face that gives the AMP Driver a 30% larger Sweet Zone, resulting in more distance, accuracy and forgiveness in shots hit from the low heel to high toe. COBRA tested golfers hitting more than 25,000 shots and discovered that the majority of golfers hit shots across the face in this canted, elliptical pattern. We redesigned our clubface to use this phenomenon to the golfers’ advantage. We’ve added a new canted bulge with dual roll to now provide added distance and accuracy to the shots hit above and below the centerline.

TaylorMade Golf today is unveiling the longest, most innovative high performance fairway woods and Rescues we’ve ever created with the introduction of RocketBallz. The new RocketBallz metalwoods are years in the making, a byproduct of extensive research and development to find breakthrough performance in fairway woods and Rescues, most specifically increased ball speed.

“The RocketBallz fairway woods and Rescues represent a game-changing breakthrough in performance comparable to few products in the history of our industry,” said Sean Toulon, Executive Vice President of TaylorMade. “To hold a RocketBallz metalwood in your hands is to possess confidence, power, speed and distance potential that will regularly and quite literally redefine the long game for golfers.”

Construction of RocketBallz Technology
Major challenges had to be surmounted to develop RocketBallz technology, including the need to create a durable yet flexible sole/face structure with a deep sole pocket. Additionally, we needed a deeper face design and low CG to maintain excellent playability off turf. Lastly, the products needed a front-low CG without sacrificing playability and control.

To achieve these qualities, the RocketBallz fairway woods and Rescues were developed with a high-strength 455 steel face plate welded to a cast body. They incorporate improved sole geometry and a “Speed Pocket” to improve overall head and face flexibility and a.slightly deeper face with a further-forward CG location than traditional designs.

RocketBallz Fairway Woods Promote up to 17 Additional Yards. Really.
RocketBallz fairway woods combine RocketBallz technology with increased face size, low CG location, advanced playability features and a lightweight shaft and grip. The combination of these elements promotes a remarkable increase in distance – better players will gain up to 17 yards.*

RocketBallz fairway heads are shaped more traditionally (compared to Burner Superfast fairways) yet are still extremely forgiving. We lowered the CG and pulled it forward to promote a higher launch angle and lower spin-rate – launch conditions that promote greater distance.

Compared to our previous fairway woods, RocketBallz fairways have a larger, deeper face and a large appearance at address. Combining an exceptionally deep face with an exceptionally low CG was a challenge we met thanks to our Ultra-Thin Wall casting process and our Thick-Thin Crown construction.

The incorporation of deeper face, low-and-forward CG and RocketBallz technology has allowed us to create the first steel fairway that reaches USGA/R&A speed limits. In addition, employing Pull-Face construction, and a high-strength 455 alloy steel face allowed us to combine high MOI with an exceptionally large face/hitting area, and more area for mis-hits above the center of the face.

The flat white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast to make it easy to align the face accurately at address. The white crown color also eliminates the glare and “hot spots” that are a common issue with gloss-finish metalwoods.

RocketBallz Tour Fairway Woods
We’re also offering the RocketBallz Tour fairway wood with a similar shape and face size but a slightly smaller address profile, a more open face angle, and toe weighted center of gravity and come equipped with a tour-grade shaft that’s heavier and stiffer compared to the stock shaft in the standard RocketBallz fairways.

RocketBallz Rescues
Much like in the fairway wood category, hybrids have yet to benefit from a technology that adds significant speed to the face — until now.

Two models of RocketBallz Rescue are being offered, standard and Tour. The standard model incorporates a lightweight shaft and lightweight grip to promote increased swing speed. The clubface is large and deep, yet the CG is located low and forward, a combination that’s desirable yet difficult to achieve, made possible employing both our Ultra-Thin Wall casting process and our Thick-Thin crown design. The resulting combination of the afore-mentioned attributes promotes faster ball speed, a higher launch angle and lower spin-rates for significantly greater distance.

The RocketBallz Tour Rescue has a comparatively smaller address appearance, a slightly open face angle, a toe-weighted CG, and is equipped with a heavier, stiffer, tour-grade shaft.

The overall weight of the standard RocketBallz Rescue is less than 350 grams, making it exceptionally light. As with the RocketBallz fairway woods, we’ve rebalanced the Rescues to a highly higher swingweight to help players generate more swing speed, and we redesigned the head’s mass properties and the shaft to promote playability.

This length, combined with the lightweight shaft and grip and the effect of RocketBallz technology on the COR, makes it one of the longest hybrids in company history.

Both the standard RocketBallz Rescue and the Tour version will feature a flat white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast to make it easy to align the face accurately at address. The white crown color also eliminates the glare and “hot spots” that are a common issue with gloss-finish metalwoods.

Pricing and Availability

TaylorMade Golf, today introduced RocketBallz irons, a progressive and dynamic set engineered to deliver effortless distance and a higher and straighter ball flight. This winning combination of distance and accuracy makes the new RBZ iron a game-changer and positions to be one of the greatest iron sets in company history.

Key to the distance performance of RocketBallz irons is a large, thin clubface that’s strong and stiff at the perimeter and thin at the inner edge, allowing the face to flex freely like a trampoline. No part of the clubhead structure inhibits or restricts the flexion of the face. RocketBallz also incorporate TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone clubface technology, which expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speed, promoting more distance on off-center hits.

Every RBZ iron head, from the 3- to the lob wedge, is uniquely constructed and features a progressive length and spec package, which has been carefully coordinated to ensure proper trajectory and distance gaps throughout the set.

RocketBallz 3- through 5-irons feature a new, hollow clubhead construction akin to that of the company’s industry leading line of metalwoods. This hollow head construction allows the company’s engineers to create the clubface (455 carpenter’s steel in the 3- through 5), and allows for a lower and centered CG location which ensures pure contact on the face when hitting off turf, promoting maximum energy transfer at impact.

Lowering the CG also allowed TaylorMade engineers to strengthen the loft to promote a more penetrating flight. This improved CG location is made possible in the 3- to 6-irons by thinning areas of the sole, top-line and back wall, then repositioning the saved weight strategically to the back wall and heel to shift the CG lower and more toward the center.

New Technology Promotes Accuracy
Key to the improved accuracy of RocketBallz irons is the new “Toe-Bar” feature, positioned in the upper toe, and the new design of the Inverted Cone. Fast-faced irons suffer in terms of accuracy because the asymmetrical shape of an iron face naturally causes the flex-point of the face to direct the ball off-line. The Toe-Bar and redesigned Inverted Cone together stiffen the toe-area of the clubface so that when the face flexes it directs the ball straight forward.

“We’ve worked extensively to advance fast-faced iron performance, and feel like we’re well ahead of our competitors in this category,” said Bret Wahl, TaylorMade senior director of iron, wedge and putter research and development. “We’ve learned that high COR is most useful when on top of high speed you can also control the face-flexion to send the ball on an accurate flight-line. With that in mind, we’re very pleased with what we’ve achieved with the RocketBallz iron.”

Progressive Clubhead Shapes
RocketBallz clubheads are progressively shaped, with smaller, compact short-irons, deep undercut-cavity middle-irons and large, hollow long-irons. All feature TaylorMade’s Multi-functional Sole (see Multi-Functional Sole tech brief), while the sand wedge, attack wedge and lob wedge all incorporate our new ATV sole.

Advanced Engineering for Better Feel
A new vibration and sound control system in the 3-iron to pitching wedge dampens unwanted vibration without slowing the face down. We’re using a new Japanese urethane layer for the first time that’s exceptionally soft and pliable; it works in conjunction with the badge system to absorb unwanted vibration and sound without slowing the face.

Also, every RocketBallz iron is engineered with an added cavity chamber in the heel at the point of the hosel-to-face transition that makes the heads easier to bend, allowing us to offer RocketBallz in 4 degrees upright, 4 degrees flat, and plus-or-minus 2 degrees in loft. The necessity for this was discovered during prototyping as the hard 455 steel used for the clubheads makes bending difficult.

Club Specs, Pricing and Availability
RocketBallz irons are available in 3-iron through LW, right-handed and left-handed (no left-handed LW).

Sets of eight clubs are being sold at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $699 with steel shafts, $899 with graphite shafts. Steel shafts weigh 85 grams, steel wedge shafts are heavier at 105 grams to promote increased rhythm and feel. Graphite shafts weight 65 grams.

Ladies’ RocketBallz irons are available in 5-iron through SW, equipped with a lightweight 55-gram graphite shaft, and carrying an MSRP of $899. The grip is a new design created especially for RocketBallz irons.

Availability at retail starts on February 3, 2012.

TaylorMade Golf today launched R11S, the most technologically advanced driver to date. The all-white, USGA maximum 460cc R11S features a 3° Flight Control Technology (FCT) sleeve and an all-new 5-way Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP) which allows the golfer to find their optimum address set-up – a proprietary setting not found in any other driver. Combined with TaylorMade’s Movable Weight Technology (MWT), the new R11S driver can be tuned for 80 separate launch settings, making it the most adjustable driver in golf.

At 460cc, the R11S is at the USGA limit for size. Similar to the original R11, the new R11S features a flat-white crown color and black PVD face to improve alignment and accuracy off the tee. Its address footprint measures more than 11,500 mm², and its white crown color makes it appear even larger (2%). That’s an advantage given that TaylorMade testing indicates that the majority of golfers gain confidence at address from a head that appears large relative to the ball.

The R11S driver’s modern-classical clubhead shape is intended to suit the eye of better players, while still providing ample forgiveness and confidence for average players. The head boasts a contemporary, slightly more triangular appearance than traditionally shaped drivers that provides higher MOI and a deeper, farther-forward CG position

New 5-Way ASP Provides More Tuning Options
ASP technology was a major performance breakthrough as it complimented Flight Control, a technology first introduced in the R9 family. When FCT is employed alone, the loft and face angle is coupled by the sleeve system.

Adjustable Sole Plate technology allows the decoupling of loft and face angle by using a sole plate to adjust face angle independent of loft sleeve setting. Very simply, that means you can adjust the face angle independently of the loft, and vice versa. The five face angles made possible by the improved ASP Technology of the R11S are neutral, slightly open, open, slightly closed and closed.

ASP Technology is characterized by a raised, five-pointed plate on the sole roughly the diameter of a quarter. Changing its position is easily achieved by loosening the screw that holds it to the sole, rotating the ASP, then re-tightening the screw.

ASP works with FCT to create 40 combinations of loft and face angle, which can be used to further accentuate a face angle or counter a negative face angle due to a sleeve adjustment. It effectively doubles the range of face angle for the club for ±4° to ±6° or alternatively can create 5 lofts in 0.75° increments with the same face angle.

Flight Control Technology
Flight Control Technology allows you to change the orientation of the driver head with the shaft to effectively adjust the loft up or down, giving you 8 choices of lie and loft/face angles at range of 3° of lie and 3° loft/6° face angle for up to approximately 60 yards side-to-side trajectory adjustment and 3° and 1500 rpm of launch condition change.

Movable Weight Technology
TaylorMade introduced Movable Weight Technology (MWT) in 2004 in the r7 quad driver. MWT gives golfers the ability to easily move discretionary weight to different areas of the clubhead to shift the CG location to promote changes in trajectory that produce greater distance and accuracy. Millions of TaylorMade metalwoods with MWT have been sold since the introduction of the r7 quad.

Employing two widely spaced weight ports delivers 4 mm of CG change from heel to toe to promote up to 20 yards of side-to-side trajectory bias. The R11S includes two MWT cartridges, one weighing 10-grams and one weighing 1-gram. Configuring the weights properly is intuitive: To set up a neutral bias, install the heavy (10-gram) weight in the toe; to create a draw bias, install the heavy weight in the heel. If a more neutral setting is desired, 4- and 6-gram cartridges are available separately, and so are other cartridges of varying weights, which allow you to change the club’s swing weight as well as promoting changes in trajectory.

Combining MWT, FCT and ASP
Together, MWT, FCT and ASP allows for 80 launch-condition combinations, the most of any driver in existence. The total launch condition range is 3° and 1500 rpm by combining full FCT and MWT settings.

Players can also adjust the weights to influence trajectory, either to enhance the launch conditions created by the face angle setting, or independent of the face-angle setting. For instance, some players prefer to look at an open face at address while still desiring a draw-bias performance. With the R11S driver, the player can open the face and install the heavy weight in the heel, resulting in an open face but a draw bias weighting.

Inverted Cone Technology
Like every TaylorMade driver since the R500 Series (launched in 2002), the R11S incorporates TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone clubface technology, which dramatically expands the COR zone, which is the portion of the clubface that delivers maximum ball speed.

Shaft and Club Specs
The R11S measures 45.75” and is equipped with an Aldila RIP Phenom 60 shaft (X, S, R and M flexes), which weighs 60 grams and which features a medium-firm tip profile. RIP shafts feature Reverse Interlaminar Placement to provide more stability more stability at impact and promote more distance and control without the harsh feel associated with some firmer tip shafts.

Grip: TM FCT.
Lofts: 9°, 10.5°, 12° in right-handed; 9° and 10.5° in left-handed.
Street price: $399.

The R11S TP is equipped with an Aldila RIP Phenom TP 65 (X, S, R)
25 additional TP shaft choices are also available.

Grip: TM FCT.
Lofts: 9°, 10.5° in right-handed; 9° and 10.5° in left-handed.
Street price: $499.

To achieve top-level performance on every shot in the arsenal, Nike Golf has created the VR Pro Limited Edition fairway woods. With the demanding standards of Nike Golf athletes, the VR Pro Limited Edition fairway wood provides shot-shaping distance, green-seeking accuracy and consistent reliability.

Already in the bag of Nike Golf athletes Stephen Ames, Stewart Cink, Simon Dyson, Francesco Molinari and Tiger Woods, the VR Pro Limited Edition fairway woods are currently available at retail. The tour-driven design of the VR Pro Limited Edition fairway wood has a head shape that is slightly pear, with a mid-to-low face height made from 455 stainless steel. This design addresses the tour athlete’s need for great feel and maximum confidence to attack the target from anywhere.

A leader in innovation, Nike Golf utilizes the recognizable variable Compression Channel technology to increase speed at more spots on the club face, delivering greater distance on draws, stingers, high cuts, fades or straight bombs. The full-length Compression Channel combined with the variation in the depth of the channel in specific locations, allows the consumer to generate more ball speed which translates to greater distance.

The new MRC Diamana ‘Ahina shaft incorporates Mitsubishi Rayon’s signature Multi-Dimensional Interlay technology (MDI) to deliver a stiffer mid and tip section than its predecessor.

The Nike VR Pro Limited Edition fairway wood is a perfect complement to the VR Pro Limited Edition driver; both are designed for golfers who prefer more traditional wood shapes and who demand tour-level performance.

VR Pro Limited Edition Fairway Woods

Bridgestone Golf announced today the release of its new line of J40 hybrids. The hybrids, part of Bridgestone’s comprehensive J40 club launch, will be available at golf specialty and on-course retailers nationwide in October 2011. Boasting design improvements in clubhead shaping and weighting, the J40s are Bridgestone’s longest, most forgiving utility clubs to date.

“The hybrid is taking on an increasingly important role in golf given the decline in long iron usage,” said Corey Consuegra, Golf Club Marketing Manager, Bridgestone Golf, Inc. “Our newJ40 hybrids are longer and more forgiving than our previous offerings, and we expect them to find a place in many serious players’ bags.”

The J40 hybrids feature:

longer heel-to-toe design for more forgiveness on off-center hits

17-4 stainless steel casting for the ultimate in soft-but-solid feel

clubhead shaping and tungsten weighting designed to increase stability and distance with a draw bias on all shots

Bridgestone’s proprietary Variable Face Thickness Design providing increased mass on the perimeter of the face for higher ball speed on off-center hits

blade-like masking at address that increases visible face area for more confidence at address

The J40 hybrids are available in 18 (2h), 21 (3h), and 24 (4h) degrees of loft and come standard with a Project X® Graphite shaft. The clubs will feature a street price of $179 each (MSRP $199) and will be available in October 2011.

Watch these two videos as Mizuno Golf Master Instructor Dr. Gary Wiren puts his teaching skills to a unique new test, analyzing the swings of Los Angeles Dodgers Pitchers Chad Billingsley and Jonathon Broxton, along with Chicago White Sox Relief Pitcher, Chris Sale. And find out how well their skills transfer from the baseball diamond to the golf course.

Chad Billingsley

During his Mizuno Golf custom-fitting session in Arizona, Billingsley showed that speed and power applied both to his pitching and his golf game, registering a swing speed of 94 mph on Mizuno’s Shaft Optimizer and gaining 16 yards with the JPX-800 6-iron over his previous 6-iron.

Jonathon Broxton

What may be surprising is that this 300 lb mountain of a man, possesses a golf swing that’s as smooth and picturesque as they come. A 5-handicap and arguably the best golfer on the Los Angeles roster, Broxton displayed a level of finesse at his Mizuno Golf custom-fitting session that belies his “full-tilt, full-time” approach to pitching.

Chris Sale

Sale was introduced to golf at an early age and played on his high school golf team back in Lakeland, Florida. The fact that Chris “has game” was on display during his Mizuno JPX-800 Challenge and custom-fitting session in Arizona.

Todd Helton
A magician with a baseball bat and a career batting average of .324, Todd Helton is considered one of baseball’s truly elite hitters. A humble and reluctantly self-professed single-digit handicapper, Helton impressed his friends from Mizuno Golf in Arizona, showing that while he’s a magician with a bat, he’s not too shabby with a 6-iron either.

Corey Hart
Over the past four seasons, Milwaukee outfielder Corey Hart has become one of the most dangerous hitters in the big leagues, amassing more than 80 HRs and 320 RBI over this span. Well known among baseball fans for his highlight-reel “moon shots,” Hart displayed this ability to hit the “long-ball” during his Mizuno Golf custom-fitting session in Arizona, hitting the JPX-800 6-iron 17 yards further than his current 6-iron.
