It’s funny how in life, what’s old is new and what’s new is old, and this is evident with the new Cleveland Golf Classic line of drivers. The Cleveland Classic driver takes its cues from the old persimmon drivers of golf’s past, with its color scheme and sole design, that reminded me of the old wood driver from my first set of golf clubs. But, don’t let its old school style fool you, this driver is packed with performance features you’d expect in a titanium driver.

Look and Feel
What I love about the Cleveland Classic is its pear-shaped profile, that most golfers will find aesthetically pleasing at address. And what’s also really cool is how gold color trapezoid on the center of face further adds to the retro look, but also serves as an alignment aid.

While the Classic feels really light when you pick it up, don’t let that fool you. Cleveland Golf engineers, created a clubhead that features a traditional weighted head at 199g.The mass in the clubhead helps promote power and forgiveness, without slowing down your swing. Other factors that lend to its ultralite feel are what is called RightWeight Fitting.

RightWeight fitting is a combination of multiple factors: unique grip, shaft, and clubhead to achieve a specific performance. That’s why the Cleveland Classic is available in three different models: Classic 270, Classic 290, and Classic Tour. This is great, because not every golfer has different needs. For example, The Classic 270 (model tested) has a total club weight of 270 grams. This helps generate increased club head speed for maximum distance with the same swing effort.

Performance
The Cleveland Classic driver has the largest and deepest face ever produced by Cleveland Golf. This results in giving the average player one of the largest effective hitting areas and hot ball flight. You can crush your drives with the Cleveland Classic and it produces a really nice mid-high trajectory ball flight. What I really liked is how easy it is to work the ball and shape my shots with the Classic driver.

In terms of forgiveness the Cleveland Classic doesn’t disappoint. The large face uses MaxCOR2 technology for added distance and forgiveness on off-center hits. Please keep in mind that while your drive may go off target left or right, your misses will not be as severe. Will your drive go as long on a miss-hit? Of course not. But it won’t be as bad of a miss. I’ll take that any day of the week!

Overall, the Cleveland Classic driver is one of my favorite drivers from Cleveland Golf. It’s retro style, large deep face, and RightWeigt fitting technology make this a driver worth checking out. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Cleveland Classic.

Cleveland Classic Driver available Mid-February 2012. Pre-order now!

$299.99 (Classic™ 270, Classic™ 290); $379.99 (Classic™ Tour).

Earlier this week at Waialae Country Club, Johnson Wagner told TaylorMade Tour representative Paul Loegering that with the R11S, he had “never been able to hit is driver so long, high and straight.” Wagner, a new member to the TaylorMade Tour Staff in 2012, used his new white driver and a lot of confidence to pull away from a congested field at the Sony Open for his third PGA Tour win of his career.

The all-white, USGA maximum 460cc R11S features a 3° Flight Control Technology (FCT) sleeve and an all-new 5-way Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP) which allows the golfer to find their optimum address set-up – a proprietary setting not found in any other driver. Combined with TaylorMade’s Movable Weight Technology (MWT), the new R11S driver can be tuned for 80 separate launch settings, making it the most adjustable driver in golf.

Last week at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Wagner finished in the Top 10 and now sits atop the 2012 FedExCup points race.

Continuing with the perpetual theme of speed and distance in its new VR_S line of clubs in 2012, Nike Golf is introducing the Nike VR_S irons. Nike’s new award-winning VR_S club line is an extension of the successful Nike VR franchise, which was first introduced in 2008 and has more than 50 worldwide wins including three major championships.

The Nike VR_S irons feature NexCOR variable face-thickness technology, resulting in Nike’s fastest and farthest irons ever. Nike’s new NexCOR Face Technology brings driver face technology to its irons for the first time. It maximizes distance for the widest range of players through a new speed-expanding multi face thickness design. The NexCOR infinity design creates a bridge for ultra-thin, ultra-hot faces and unmatched ball speed from every club in the bag.

Nike engineers conducted impact studies and were able to map where consumers hit the ball on the face at impact on every club. Based on those results, the location of the NexCOR technology differs from club to club.

“We are driven to help golfers get better,” said Tom Stites, Director of Club Creation for Nike Golf. “This NexCOR technology allows for the clubface to produce greater energy return, higher trajectory and longer and straighter shots. Golfers will start noticing that they are hitting shorter irons into the greens. This will not only help to improve their confidence level, but also their game.”

The VR_S clubface delivers a high COR face for more distance. The new face construction expands the maximum COR zone from the low-center to the high-toe where the majority of iron shots are struck.

Using Nike’s PowerBow technology, the weight is positioned off the face with an undercut construction. The PowerBow technology produces a faster, higher launch for maximum carry, straighter ball flight and steeper descent to hold greens.

The Nike VR_S family includes drivers, fairway woods, irons and hybrids — all combining to what is the fastest and hottest family of golf clubs that Nike Golf has ever produced, and, in turn, generating more distance for every shot.

Nike Golf’s relentless pursuit of innovation will elevate the meaning of speed and distance for a full bag of clubs with the introduction of the new Nike VR_S family on February 3, 2012. Nike’s new VR_S club line is an extension of the successful Nike VR franchise, which has more than 50 worldwide professional wins including three major championships. The Nike VR_S family includes drivers, fairway woods, irons and hybrids — all combining to what is the fastest and hottest family of golf clubs that Nike Golf has ever produced, and, in turn, generating more distance for every shot.

The Nike VR_S Difference
The Nike VR_S distinguishes itself from the original VR line with its pure emphasis on speed (hence the “S” in the name). The Nike VR_S line features NexCOR Technology for slower swing speeds while the Nike VR Pro LE combines both NexCOR and the variable Compression Channel for faster swing speeds. Each club in the VR_S family will have a laser engraved NexCOR logo – a shape that mirrors the face construction inside the head, optimizing speed.

Larger Face = More Distance
Despite the USGA’s industry limitations on the driver, Nike engineers have executed an all-encompassing approach to delivering the golfer extra distance by shifting their attention to the full bag, taking every shot in the entire round and the resulting cumulative effect of distance into consideration. To generate speed and distance to every club in the bag, Nike Golf engineers focused on the “face” of not just one club such as the driver or irons, but also fairway woods and hybrids. Their aim was to create groundbreaking innovative technology that would create the fastest and hottest face on every club. Their answer was Nike’s exclusive NexCOR face technology.

“In golf, when we talk about distance, the first thing that comes to mind is the driver,” said Tom Stites, Director of Club Creation for Nike Golf. “We decided to look beyond that and focus on the entire bag from a holistic point of view. We discovered that NexCOR face technology adds distance and will play a critical role in helping golfers to become better. They’ll be hitting more shorter irons on their approach shots.”

NexCOR Face Technology
Nike’s new NexCOR Face Technology maximizes distance for the widest range of players through a new speed-expanding multi face thickness design. The NexCOR infinity design creates a bridge for ultra-thin, ultra-hot faces and unmatched ball speed from every club in the bag. The location of the NexCOR technology differs from club to club.

“In setting out to create the fastest and hottest face, we know that consumers don’t hit it in the same spot on the face every time,” said Stites. “We conducted impact studies and were able to “map” where consumers hit the ball on the face at impact on every club. Based on those results, we are able to move this NexCOR technology around on the face. The location of NexCOR on the face differs on every club. Not every face is identical.”

VR_S Speed Trials
Starting in March through May 2012, Nike Golf will be conducting VR_S Speed Trials at hundreds of participating golf retail shops and golf courses across the country. Nike’s VR_S Speed Trials will allow consumers to compare the speed of what’s in their current bag to the new Nike VR_S products on a launch monitor. Their accumulative distance will be tallied and recorded on a national leaderboard that will be featured on www.nikegolf.com.

For a list of golf shops participating, go to www.nikegolf.com. To view some Nike athletes going through the speed trials, go to: www.youtube.com/nikegolf.

Cobra AMP Driver
COBRA is excited to announce the new AMP Driver featuring E9 Face Technology with dual roll and AMPTM Speed Tuning, delivering customized distance and accuracy to golfers around the world. The AMP Driver also brings color and attitude to the golf course with black PVD and vibrant orange details on the shaft, club head and grip.

The AMP Driver also features Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT), providing golfers with the option to set the face angle as Open, Neutral or Closed to optimize ball flight for better distance and accuracy. The Aldila RIP® Speed Tuned shafts have a progressive weight design and El flex profiles that customize performance for various swing speeds. AMP Speed Tuning works in conjunction with the shaft to optimize each loft differently to deliver the best performance for a given club head speed. The premium Lamkin® R.E.L. 3Gen® Grip is vibrant orange to match the cub head design, packing the AMP Driver with style, flair and technology to help improve a golfer’s game.

The AMP Driver is also available in an offset design to reduce the effects of a slice as well as provide improved distance and accuracy. The AMP Offset Driver squares the head more quickly through impact to reduce the effects of a slice. The unique crown alignment feature also helps golfers aim the driver on target.

E9 Face Technology with dual roll
COBRA’s E9 Face Technology with dual roll utilizes an elliptical shape face that gives the AMP Driver a 30% larger Sweet Zone, resulting in more distance, accuracy and forgiveness in shots hit from the low heel to high toe. COBRA tested golfers hitting more than 25,000 shots and discovered that the majority of golfers hit shots across the face in this canted, elliptical pattern. We redesigned our clubface to use this phenomenon to the golfers’ advantage. We’ve added a new canted bulge with dual roll to now provide added distance and accuracy to the shots hit above and below the centerline.

If you play a lot of golf, you’ve probably have been fitted for at least one or all of your golf clubs in your bag. But the one thing lacking in the customization of golf clubs, is the ability to choose the color, paint, text, etc. That type of personalization is usually reserved for the Tour Pros. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could build your own custom wedges, where you could select the paint fill color, customize the text, along with loft, lie, grind, and grips? All of the above is possible now with MyCustomWedge.com from Cleveland Golf.

TaylorMade Golf today is unveiling the longest, most innovative high performance fairway woods and Rescues we’ve ever created with the introduction of RocketBallz. The new RocketBallz metalwoods are years in the making, a byproduct of extensive research and development to find breakthrough performance in fairway woods and Rescues, most specifically increased ball speed.

“The RocketBallz fairway woods and Rescues represent a game-changing breakthrough in performance comparable to few products in the history of our industry,” said Sean Toulon, Executive Vice President of TaylorMade. “To hold a RocketBallz metalwood in your hands is to possess confidence, power, speed and distance potential that will regularly and quite literally redefine the long game for golfers.”

Construction of RocketBallz Technology
Major challenges had to be surmounted to develop RocketBallz technology, including the need to create a durable yet flexible sole/face structure with a deep sole pocket. Additionally, we needed a deeper face design and low CG to maintain excellent playability off turf. Lastly, the products needed a front-low CG without sacrificing playability and control.

To achieve these qualities, the RocketBallz fairway woods and Rescues were developed with a high-strength 455 steel face plate welded to a cast body. They incorporate improved sole geometry and a “Speed Pocket” to improve overall head and face flexibility and a.slightly deeper face with a further-forward CG location than traditional designs.

RocketBallz Fairway Woods Promote up to 17 Additional Yards. Really.
RocketBallz fairway woods combine RocketBallz technology with increased face size, low CG location, advanced playability features and a lightweight shaft and grip. The combination of these elements promotes a remarkable increase in distance – better players will gain up to 17 yards.*

RocketBallz fairway heads are shaped more traditionally (compared to Burner Superfast fairways) yet are still extremely forgiving. We lowered the CG and pulled it forward to promote a higher launch angle and lower spin-rate – launch conditions that promote greater distance.

Compared to our previous fairway woods, RocketBallz fairways have a larger, deeper face and a large appearance at address. Combining an exceptionally deep face with an exceptionally low CG was a challenge we met thanks to our Ultra-Thin Wall casting process and our Thick-Thin Crown construction.

The incorporation of deeper face, low-and-forward CG and RocketBallz technology has allowed us to create the first steel fairway that reaches USGA/R&A speed limits. In addition, employing Pull-Face construction, and a high-strength 455 alloy steel face allowed us to combine high MOI with an exceptionally large face/hitting area, and more area for mis-hits above the center of the face.

The flat white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast to make it easy to align the face accurately at address. The white crown color also eliminates the glare and “hot spots” that are a common issue with gloss-finish metalwoods.

RocketBallz Tour Fairway Woods
We’re also offering the RocketBallz Tour fairway wood with a similar shape and face size but a slightly smaller address profile, a more open face angle, and toe weighted center of gravity and come equipped with a tour-grade shaft that’s heavier and stiffer compared to the stock shaft in the standard RocketBallz fairways.

RocketBallz Rescues
Much like in the fairway wood category, hybrids have yet to benefit from a technology that adds significant speed to the face — until now.

Two models of RocketBallz Rescue are being offered, standard and Tour. The standard model incorporates a lightweight shaft and lightweight grip to promote increased swing speed. The clubface is large and deep, yet the CG is located low and forward, a combination that’s desirable yet difficult to achieve, made possible employing both our Ultra-Thin Wall casting process and our Thick-Thin crown design. The resulting combination of the afore-mentioned attributes promotes faster ball speed, a higher launch angle and lower spin-rates for significantly greater distance.

The RocketBallz Tour Rescue has a comparatively smaller address appearance, a slightly open face angle, a toe-weighted CG, and is equipped with a heavier, stiffer, tour-grade shaft.

The overall weight of the standard RocketBallz Rescue is less than 350 grams, making it exceptionally light. As with the RocketBallz fairway woods, we’ve rebalanced the Rescues to a highly higher swingweight to help players generate more swing speed, and we redesigned the head’s mass properties and the shaft to promote playability.

This length, combined with the lightweight shaft and grip and the effect of RocketBallz technology on the COR, makes it one of the longest hybrids in company history.

Both the standard RocketBallz Rescue and the Tour version will feature a flat white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast to make it easy to align the face accurately at address. The white crown color also eliminates the glare and “hot spots” that are a common issue with gloss-finish metalwoods.

Pricing and Availability
The RocketBallz fairways’ lightweight shaft and grip are critical to the overall weight of just 315 grams. The RocketBallz fairway woods come standard with a Matrix Ozik XCon 5 50-gram graphite shaft in four flexes (S, R, M, L).

TaylorMade Golf, today introduced RocketBallz irons, a progressive and dynamic set engineered to deliver effortless distance and a higher and straighter ball flight. This winning combination of distance and accuracy makes the new RBZ iron a game-changer and positions to be one of the greatest iron sets in company history.

Key to the distance performance of RocketBallz irons is a large, thin clubface that’s strong and stiff at the perimeter and thin at the inner edge, allowing the face to flex freely like a trampoline. No part of the clubhead structure inhibits or restricts the flexion of the face. RocketBallz also incorporate TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone clubface technology, which expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speed, promoting more distance on off-center hits.

Every RBZ iron head, from the 3- to the lob wedge, is uniquely constructed and features a progressive length and spec package, which has been carefully coordinated to ensure proper trajectory and distance gaps throughout the set.

RocketBallz 3- through 5-irons feature a new, hollow clubhead construction akin to that of the company’s industry leading line of metalwoods. This hollow head construction allows the company’s engineers to create the clubface (455 carpenter’s steel in the 3- through 5), and allows for a lower and centered CG location which ensures pure contact on the face when hitting off turf, promoting maximum energy transfer at impact.

Lowering the CG also allowed TaylorMade engineers to strengthen the loft to promote a more penetrating flight. This improved CG location is made possible in the 3- to 6-irons by thinning areas of the sole, top-line and back wall, then repositioning the saved weight strategically to the back wall and heel to shift the CG lower and more toward the center.

New Technology Promotes Accuracy
Key to the improved accuracy of RocketBallz irons is the new “Toe-Bar” feature, positioned in the upper toe, and the new design of the Inverted Cone. Fast-faced irons suffer in terms of accuracy because the asymmetrical shape of an iron face naturally causes the flex-point of the face to direct the ball off-line. The Toe-Bar and redesigned Inverted Cone together stiffen the toe-area of the clubface so that when the face flexes it directs the ball straight forward.

“We’ve worked extensively to advance fast-faced iron performance, and feel like we’re well ahead of our competitors in this category,” said Bret Wahl, TaylorMade senior director of iron, wedge and putter research and development. “We’ve learned that high COR is most useful when on top of high speed you can also control the face-flexion to send the ball on an accurate flight-line. With that in mind, we’re very pleased with what we’ve achieved with the RocketBallz iron.”

Progressive Clubhead Shapes
RocketBallz clubheads are progressively shaped, with smaller, compact short-irons, deep undercut-cavity middle-irons and large, hollow long-irons. All feature TaylorMade’s Multi-functional Sole (see Multi-Functional Sole tech brief), while the sand wedge, attack wedge and lob wedge all incorporate our new ATV sole.

Advanced Engineering for Better Feel
A new vibration and sound control system in the 3-iron to pitching wedge dampens unwanted vibration without slowing the face down. We’re using a new Japanese urethane layer for the first time that’s exceptionally soft and pliable; it works in conjunction with the badge system to absorb unwanted vibration and sound without slowing the face.

Also, every RocketBallz iron is engineered with an added cavity chamber in the heel at the point of the hosel-to-face transition that makes the heads easier to bend, allowing us to offer RocketBallz in 4 degrees upright, 4 degrees flat, and plus-or-minus 2 degrees in loft. The necessity for this was discovered during prototyping as the hard 455 steel used for the clubheads makes bending difficult.

Club Specs, Pricing and Availability
RocketBallz irons are available in 3-iron through LW, right-handed and left-handed (no left-handed LW).

Sets of eight clubs are being sold at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $699 with steel shafts, $899 with graphite shafts. Steel shafts weigh 85 grams, steel wedge shafts are heavier at 105 grams to promote increased rhythm and feel. Graphite shafts weight 65 grams.

Ladies’ RocketBallz irons are available in 5-iron through SW, equipped with a lightweight 55-gram graphite shaft, and carrying an MSRP of $899. The grip is a new design created especially for RocketBallz irons.

Availability at retail starts on February 3, 2012.
